Walkthrough & Notes

There are 3 sets of tracks that must be examined; 2 in the vicinity of goblins along the path, upwards, and 1 at the top of the path, in between 2 wargs. The second set of tracks spawns after the first set of tracks are examined; the third set spawns after the player comes into the vicinity of the camp halfway up the path; finally, the dying goblin spawns when the third set of tracks are examined. If you reach the wargs and there is no third set of tracks, or reach the final camp and there is no dying goblin, then it means you missed an objective and need to retrace your steps. Although some of the quest objectives imply otherwise ("defeat the goblins"), it is possible to complete this mission without defeating any mobs, using some combination of stealth and/or Crowd Control and/or combat-removal skills, such as Still As Death, and/or speedup skills, such as Sprint, Rush, Charge, Call of the Second Age, etc., after pulling mobs to the far northwestern corner of the map. The most plausible manifestation of  Twist: Surprise Attack is that a patrol of 2 goblins appears after defeating all of the goblins at the mid-path camp (which, as noted above, may be optional, depending on class or skills). This patrol heads towards the camp, then parks there indefinitely. But they can be easily avoided, if expected. After completing your objectives, there is a limited time (2 minutes) before you will be automatically ejected from the instance. You need to find and open the "Mission Reward" chest before this happens. Defeating more enemies does not reset the timer!

Quest Text

Bestowal Dialogue 'Follow Bilbo's trail into the Misty Mountains, my persistent friend. And stay alert as you go, for those paths are dangerous, especially in winter. It may be that Kúblagat is not the only spirit of the storm haunting those slopes! 'Good fortune go with you, and bring Bilbo unharmed back to us!' 'Bilbo may have left tracks behind as he journeyed north... unless the recent snows have buried them!'  Twist: Surprise Attack Background If Glóin is right, Bilbo Baggins may have ventured north into the Misty Mountains instead of returning to Rivendell. Objective 1 Examine the tracks in the snow to the north If Bilbo did come this way, some of his tracks may have survived being covered by the recent snows. (Examine first set of tracks) Objective 2 Defeat the goblins and journey north in the search of more tracks More of Bilbo's tracks may lie to the north, hopefully not covered by the recent snows. You hear voices on the wind. Goblin-voices! The tracks lead north, near the flickering light of a campfire Objective 3 Search the campsite to the north-east for sign of Bilbo A small campfire to the north-east of the tracks my conceal some sign of Bilbo. Scouting Goblin-skirmisher says, "The wargs'll get him, don't worry about that!" There seems to be no sign of Bilbo at this camp. Did he travel further north? Objective 4 Defeat the goblins and journey north in the search of more tracks Perhaps Bilbo evaded the goblins at the campfire and journeyed further north. You should search for more tracks in the wide-open space at the top of the slope. (Examine last set of tracks, in the vicinity of 2 wargs) The trail leads directly toward another goblin encampment! What was Bilbo thinking? Objective 5 Investigate the goblin-camp to the north-east A goblin-camp to the north-east lies directly in the path of the last tracks you found. What was Bilbo thinking? (Approaching encampment) This camp is full of slain goblins and wargs. What happened here? Objective 6 Talk to the dying goblin in the camp of the slain A dying goblin lies among the slain. Did he see Bilbo? Dying goblin: 'You... you're looking for that halfling... aren't you?' The goblin coughs, spluttering and choking on his own blood. 'You're too late! My wargs found 'im... by rights he should belong to me... but look around! Sorrog and Bauglám squabbled over the spoils... claimed the halfling for... themselves...' He closes his eyes, near to death. You demand that he tell you where Bilbo was taken, and before he dies he mumbles a single word. 'No...' he mutters, and dies laughing. MISSION COMPLETE! Celeblír says, "Bilbo has been captured by goblins? This is worse than I feared!" Celeblír: 'Dead goblins and wargs, but no sign of Bilbo? We need to find him, and quickly!'
